Title: Board Game Review: Carcassonne

Author: TheBoardGameFamily
Description: Carcassonne is another great family board game. In fact, Carcassonne is frequently considered a gateway game - a game that's great to introduce people to more designer or "euro" board games. And we'll have to admit that the unique play mechanics of Carcassonne was such a new experience for our family that it helped introduce us to many other excellent board games that we've added to our collection. Carcassonne is on our top 10 family game list.

I'm not sure which version that is but the one we play has about 12 river pieces. The way we play those are to separate all of them from the rest, everyone picks those first, in turn, and play them as you would any other tile, by claiming farm/road/castle. The river must flow in one general direction to keep the map/tiles spread out for the expansion required for the rest of the game/tiles. This seems to work well. It's a good way to start the game evenly and ensure the river will flow correctly

It's great for 2 players - but nothing close to Monopoly.

Yes, its good for 2 people or more, just like Monopoly

OMG us IT techs at work play this every day at work during lunch... its a lot of fun!

We haven't tried Conflicting Kingdoms.

The 3 vs. 4 points for farmers depends on the edition of the game you have. Ours was an earlier edition where you get 4. We think they changed it because farmers came to have a lot of power with 4.

Yes - it is good for 2 players. Depending on the players you can get pretty cut-throat.

is this game good for 2 people?

Played yesterday for my first time with 3 friends, damm we played for all the afternoon. And we are 22 yold xD

1. Awesome review! 2. I thought city points for farms was 3 not 4. 3. It is way better when a computer scores for you (meaning play on the XBox360). 4. Multiplayer is best! 5. I'LL Take you DOWN! ;-)

Hi, have you guys played Conflicting Kingdoms?

We haven't tried Cities and Knights yet - although it will be the first expansion we pick up for it since we think it looks like the best expansion.

Have you picked up Cities and Knights? Probably the best expansion to Settlers of Catan. Much more so thatn Seafarers. u_u

It's a fantastic game to play with 4 players!

Hey, you said that it's a 5 player game, would it be good for 4 players?

They should do a city version of this with gangs, drug dealers (farmers) and hitmen. :D

Nice video, The strength of Carcassonne is that you can pick it up in one turn, and then because it is quite a short game (about half an hour) (compared to games like settlers that take 2 hours) the new player will still want to play again, meaning you can enjoy it with new people very quickly. Here's a detailed written review (if anyone's interested)

You look like so nice and harmonious family! Have a good day! :D

great review and great game

Love this game!

It looks like they are different versions of the rules. I'm going off the rule book that came with our game (can't recall the year we bought it), but I just checked the Rio Grande Games website and the rules they have posted states "3 points" just like you said. So it looks like it does depend on the rule version you have. That farm point difference will change the strategies. We like to play with the Inns & Cathedrals and the Traders & Builders expansions.

must be different editions of the rules cos mine says three. but then i cant find anything to say that a shield in a city is worth extra points even though it makes complete sense. i was wondering what they were for. Which expansions do you recommend?

Yes. Here is the statement from the rules under "Farmer Scoring" - "For each city a player's farmers supply, the player who deployed the farmer(s) earns 4 points, regardless of the size of the city."

are you sure its 4 points?

its interesting. Yesterday I played this game with some people with an older version, who i'd never played before, and we kept arguing about the rules. After a while, we found the rules were quite different, for example 4 poinnts for a farm insted of 3.
